  • 1:10 - 1:25 holy shit that transition was smooooth. On the other hand this is quite a definite quide on sumo. I ditched the conventional due to lower back problems, while I still would say that conventional is the best strength builder I just couldn't reason with myself to continue pulling and living in pain every day. Some of us just aren't build for it (technique is also a factor in this). So I went to the dark side and switched to sumo. This video really cemented my decision and helped me progress significantly and with NO pain. Brilliant video, thank you!

    • Same here. I focus on sumo to avoid lumbar pain due to herniations and stenosis. My biggest issue is setup, as I am 6-3 and my frame not optimal for DL either style.

    • Probably just need to slow down how much weight you’re using. Go a bit lighter and find ways to move that don’t hurt.

  • Today was the first time I tried sumo. I'm still working on my form, but holding onto the smooth part was a pain. I was wondering how people manage the grip width considering the smooth section of the bar. If I go wider grip, so I have the ruff part to grasp, my arms are too wide, making the lift harder and awkward. Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

  • hey man, great video! I have a question tho... 2:14 you say that your knees should be above your ankles but if I am correct you are a pretty tall guy and this is not a MUST if you are shorter ... I am 178 and with not very wide stance I cannot achieve knees-ankles on one line... Is this alright or should I try narrow-er stance?

    • I don’t think anything when it comes to technique is a must. I think there are some general rules to help people get headed in the right direction but when it boils down to it it’s all about individualizations.

    • I experienced that as well when I switched. It’s likely you’ll need to regulate your volume and intensity to deal with it. It’s a new pattern, your body needs time and appropriate progression to deal with it. Perhaps you dove in a bit too aggressively.

  • Damn I was about to switch to conventional out of frustration w my sumo being trash and my hips always rising. I decided to use no hip movement or any shooting of my groin into the bar to get a break of the floor. I pulled something like 10 singles w 405 just to get the positions and timing nailed down. The result was every single getting cleaner more fluid and faster every set. Took longer to break the floor than usual but put me in a good position so that the hardest part of the lift is done at the bottom (as it should be). I also widened my stance a hair from shins at ring to inner calf at ring. Nothing crazy from a cutting of rom perspective, but put my hips closer and felt easier to press down and out with my quads. 👌
